What do you think about Michel Houellebecq? Is he famous outside of France?

his 'elementary particles' was quite traumatizing to read. Not a book for those with depression or low self esteem.

Btw, does anybody know where he got the idea of "sexual free market" and its side effects from??

Both "elementary particles" and "whatever' are about the ugly side of the Sexual revolution of the 60s and its effects on relationships. The revolution moreorless killed off traditional ideas like fidelity, devotion etc, replacing it (according to MH) with a YOLO morality.

I think it's discussed in Whatever (Extension du domaine de la lutte)

What I meant to ask is whether the idea is his own or has it already been explored by others before him?

It's just common sense. Any guy like me, described as a 'lickalotopus', is going to potentially father more kids than you.

It seems to be a common idea among misogynists.

Houellebecq seems to like Schopenhauer and Aldous Huxley, maybe he took the idea from them

Chronicle of the late 20C? Reminds me of Stendhal. Is he French?

I read Atomised in a few hours a year or so ago. It's a very easy read with some interesting ideas. But nothing incredibly interesting.

I wish I wasn't such as slow reader. I've read it for days and I'm only in the very middle of the book

I wouldn't beat yourself up about it. Speed really doesn't matter. It's how you get a hold on the text. Whether it takes you a couple days or a few hours, nothing it more important than that.
