Hey, /lit/,

I'm about to embark on my Master's degree in Folklore starting this Spring.

Does anyone have any advice about grad school? What kind of experience can I expect to find in graduate school? What should I be prepared for?

Masters in CW here. Prepare for the most pretentious faggots you'll ever meet in your life. Prepare for people thinking they don't need a masters in the subject to know more about it than you. Prepare for all the LOLNOJOB jokes. Prepare to not give a fuck because you're doing something you want to do with your life for the soul purpose of the betterment of understanding ad not because you are another waste of space who just wants money.

Holy fuck, don't. Folklore is a form of pop-culture, and it's the absolute worst kind of it.

Assuming this isn't a troll thread, why on earth would you do something like that? You know, there's nothing stoppping you from learning a useful skill and earning a reasonable living while still studying the things that interest you. If you're really lucky, the best you can hope for is a life sequestered in the academic bubble, peering out at actual daily life like a monk in his cell, and trying to make sense out of a world of experience that no longer includes you.

Anthropology student here. It's very versatile, so you can probably gear it towards anything in humanities and a few things in the private sector as well. But it's the sort of thing you want to combine with something else.

Yup, you can go into cultural anthropology, which is basically like sociology, only somewhat less concerned with numbers, or linguistics, or archeology, or physical anthropology, which is basically primatology.

So you can work with monkeys or languages or folklore or whatever you want.

Folklorist isn't a terrible gig. It's just one of those positions where you'll have to do a lot of writing for journals and a lot of social networking in order to make a living from it. It's not like one of those easy mode practical degrees, where the jobs just fall in your lap.
