Which book would you recommend as a gift for a 19-year old girl? She likes Kafka, Borges and PKD, from what I gather.

She likes PKD? Consider "Junkie" by William S. Burroughs.

What on earth is the connection there?

They were both junkies.

Reading "Junkie" should flow naturally from reading "A Scanner Darkly".

Philip K Dick was not a junkie. They wrote nothing alike. The subject matter isn't similar. It doesn't follow at all. A Scanner Darkly is a carefully crafted satire/deconstruction of the USA circa 69. Don't reduce it to a drug novel, because that's not what PKD was doing, and it doesn't match with what he did for his entire career.

Whoah whoah, PKD took amphetamines because his wife liked expensive things. You have to do 60 pages a day if you're whipped like he was.

She might like some of the work by Roberto Bolano (2666. The Savage Detectives, By Night in Chile), Vonnegut (Slaughterhouse 5, Breakfast for Champions), Gogol (Dead Souls, A collection of his short stories) and Pynchon (V., The Crying Lot of 49)

What? Which of his wives are you referring to. For most of his life PKD was poor as fuck. He wasn't taking amphetamines at the time he wrote A Scanner Darkly, it's as anti-drug as a book can possibly be. You're referring to his short-lived guru phase, when he pulled a Salinger and spent all his time with teenage girls. How long do you think that lasted?

Also, man, come on, the term junkie is used almost exclusively to describe a heroin addict. Get your shit together.

Also might as well throw in Naked Lunch by William S. Burroughs too. Not really connected but since she likes basically all the things I like she most likely will like it as well.

I was speaking in broad terms about the large amount of his work that he wrote while using speed. And sorry, I should have responded only if that one poster had used the term methhead. According to wikipedia, A Scanner Darkly was the first one he wrote without it. The thing about the wife I heard in a two hour or so long interview with him on youtube somewhere. He told the interviewer he was in financial trouble because his wife (don't know which one) had spending habits he was struggling to keep up with, so he started using speed.

It's in here somewhere:
