Hey lit, what are some good books on American foreign policy WW1 to the fall of the Soviet Union?

>> No.2956734

Robert McNamara's works cover WWII to the end of the Cold War in a very interesting way.

>> No.2957169

There's a good book by William Blum called Killing Hope that covers all America's CIA and military interventions after WWII

>> No.2957231

Halberstam - The Best and the Brightest (Kennedy era, Vietnam)

Little - American Orientalism (US - Middle East relations from WWII to the Iraq War)

Fisk - The Great War for Civilisation: The Conquest of the Middle East (similar subject material)

Mearsheimer and Walt - The Israel Lobby (US - Israel)

>> No.2957246

>>2957231

Oh, and

Cooley - Unholy Wars: Afghanistan, America, and International Terrorism (American involvement in the Soviet-Afghan war and its far-reaching consequences)

>> No.2957350

any book that ignores the rampant infiltration of the US government by communists and other traitors should be ignored.

>implying he's not one of the greatest political essayists of the modern era

>> No.2957469

I'll out and out say it.

Hitchens is not one of the greatest political essayists of the modern era. He is not very good.

>> No.2957486

>>2957469
It's all subjective sure, but he has an incisive and articulate writing style that's almost unparalleled.

>> No.2957488

>>2957486
not really ,no

>> No.2957500

>>2957488
Who would you prefer then? If you say Chomsky I'm out. As someone who doesn't really care for the whole atheist v theist debattle I don't really think any of his contemporaries could trump Hitchens ability as an essayist.

>> No.2957505

>>2957500
Chomsky is an amazing stylist and highly regarded intellectual. His success among most of america is earned.

>> No.2957519

>>2957505
He's earned a rep from his work with linguistics sure, but in looking at the criteria of public intellectual, writer and orator; Hitchens is superior in pretty much every aspect.

I'd be hard pressed to find someone who could write with the same ferocity, erudition and articulation without it coming out as pretentious shit.

>> No.2957522

>>2957519
I don't think Hitchens could...

>> No.2957525

>>2957522
damn shame

>> No.2957688

>>2957522
>>2957525
I sure hope you weren't suggesting Hitchens couldn't write like Hitchens.
