/lit/ what's your opinion about Sophie's World?

>> No.2950271

It's a pretty cute introduction, nothing more.

A fine place to begin a study of philosophy.

Shit.

Absolute shit. Smug, boring, watered-down, hypocritical, paedagogically-minded philosophical shit. Whenever grown-ups decide they want to TEACH children something it goes horribly wrong.

My mother bought it. I study philosophy and she wanted to know something about it since she never studied the subject.
I'd say that, given the result, it's pretty good: she understood the basic concepts of the philosophers mentioned in it at least.
As far as the story goes, she said that it sounded interesting at first, but then it got a bit boring.

That made perfect sense, what's your problem?

The philosophy lessons and metafiction are awesome. Everything else is crap.
