Hey /lit/, my sisters birthday is coming up and I wish to get her a book.
She is however, turning 16.

What would be a good book for her to get into?

I hear 50 Shades of Gray is pretty popular with that age group.

I'm a girl and when I was sixteen I was really into...

Portrait of an Artist as a Young Man, Dubliners
Anything Kafka
The Age of Reason (Sartre)
Brave New World
Pablo Neruda's poetry, ee cummings' poetry
Waiting for Godot
Lolita
Revolutionary Road (Yates -- I know there was a terrible movie but the book is fucking brilliant)
Portnoy's Complaint
Cat's Eye (Atwood)
Of Love and Other Demons (Marquez)

If she's precocious and political, though, give her Christine de Pizan's Book of the City of Ladies and change her life forever.

I think she's a bit old to really get into Perks on an emotional level, although she'll be able to appreciate it. (says femanon who loved that book when she was young. There's a big difference between 12 and 16 when you're 16. I'm not 16.)

I don't think I've ever seen anyone mention Revolutionary Road on /lit/ before. It was one of the few books I read that left me thinking, "That was a giant waste of time."
