What does /lit/ think of the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett?

Fun but insubstantial.

Very good. Fun and easy.

I find the way he manages to continuously build the world, while making each novel completely stand-alone to such a degree that a new reader can pick up any one of them and start reading, incredible and admirable.

Well said.

It also has the neat effect of making each novel richer if you've read the entire series.

So if you're just reading one of them, and a dragon flies down the street it's like

> This very colorful character on the street reacted in a very silly way

And that's perfectly amusing on its own, and just reads like the book is very clever.

But then if you've read "Guards, Guards!" that same scene plays as

> A dragon flew down the street, and Commander Nobby Nob flipped the fuck out

and you go "Oh god, I remember that guy, I love that guy."

I bet Pratchett feels like it's a really sneaky trick he's getting away with illicitly. He's probably amazed no one has arrested him for it yet.

I've read Pyramids (great) and Eric (okay) a couple of years ago and recently picked up Small Gods at a flea market, 90 pages in and I'm enjoying it.
What should I get next?

You need some Granny Weatherwax in your life.

I love it, I'm reading through Thud right now. Gotta get me my daily dose of the Watch. Shame about his Alzheimers.
