is this philosophy?

>> No.2920751

Emma Watson walking? No. The book in her hand isn't philosophy either. It's a series of short, allegedly nonfiction narratives that the compilers believe people are likely to find meaningful or moving in some way, with some poems thrown in.

chicken soup? no that's cooking

A picture of Emma Watson? No, that's actually interesting and worth looking at.

Look guys, she's deconstructing binaries: from Chicken soup and soul to jogging and reading.

I didn't say that. First, I said that the narratives were nonfiction. Second, I didn't say that it couldn't be philosophy. Just that it wasn't really in this case.

I would argue that It can be if it's used by an author to directly convey ideas via allegory, like in Thus Spoke Zarathustra.

>> No.2920802

>>2920797
Or wait, Was Zarathustra the one where everyone is sitting around just talking about that shit?
if I'm wrong ignore me, I read Zarathustra yonks ago, and I'm having difficulty recalling much of it, it didn't really 'stay' with me.

A lot of the websites went down, and a lot of people read: idiots complained about having to scroll down to reach threads.

He did charge for his teaching did he not.

The sophists were not "bad" and their teachings were not necessarily false.

calling someone a sophist on the other hand is accusing them of profiting by teaching untruth.

It looks now like Socrates and Plato were the real sophists (in the later sense)...at least since philosophy has become anthropology.

>> No.2921211

>>2921192
It's more the teacher student relationship than charging for money specifically. So in philosophy you love knowledge and the teacher will help you find that knowledge, whereas a sophist will tell you stuff that makes you sound knowledgeable. Ironically, the most known reading of Plato treats him as a sophist, go figure.

>He did charge for his teaching did he not.

He did not. He despised his fellow man and didn't want anything to do with them even when they called upon him in political manners. He rather sat around playing games with the children. Afterwards he went into the mountains and lived on what he gathered, away from society.

He was the real deal.

In addition: All modern academic philosophers are sophists though. They get paid. And I would say, anyone who writes philosophical works in this age and does not distribute them for free (which the internet makes possible) is a sophist too. Or, if one would choose to publish physical works, one would have to do so in a manner in which one wouldn't make any profit. Anyone who asks for money to speak or make appearances is a sophist too.

A philosopher these days would work some random job or be on welfare or live from begging or crime even, and would share his wisdom free from cost. Otherwise one can't separate their higher motives from the money grubbing. Anyone who is not willing to make this sacrifice shouldn't bother with philosophy at all.
