I've never read the Foundation series, and I want to. Should I go by chronological order or publication order?

I read the original 3. After that I'm not really sure why you would want to keep reading. The writing is not excellent. The storyline is OK but not so amazing. Characters are shockingly bad. Really it's just good for its historical value, and some interesting ideas/allegory for western history. But sci-fi has really come a long way since
