So I'm trying to find a book that I want to read through a ISBN number 978-1-118-42669-2. I've tried Amazon and google with zero results. When I search the name of the book the ISBN numbers are way different. The book is for college and I really don't want to get the wrong book, but I also don't want to spend 250 dollars for a remedial course. What should I do?

It's probably likely that your professor got the ISBN wrong when writing the syllabus. I'd contact him/her.

I went to the bookstore and got that ISBN. The online bookstore comes up with a different ISBN in 1-1184-2669-X. I've tried that one and got no results. I've tried replacing the X 0 through 9 and still got zero results.

I haven't really done this before, but I went about deciphering the ISBN, yes the ISBN means something.

978 - Book publishing
1 - English
118 - Wiley Publishing (it looks like)
42669 - The specific book
2 - check digit

Is that right? Wiley Publishing has a ton of numbers though.
I saw a chemistry book, but had slightly different ISBN.

If one removes the 2;978; and the hyphens, as they are unneeded, you come out with.

I checked isbn.org converter and the 10 digit code is basically the 13 digit code.

Yeah, that's right. I even went through the publisher's website and even they don't have it. The online bookstore has the binding in looseleaf. The publisher website, amazon, and such have it in hardcover or softcover.
