Philosophy and mathematics. Literally every other major is in one way or another subsumed under mine. I am the best of the best.

Dude, you and I both know that math, and by extension logic, is the only objective discipline. But math has a funny thing going on where it's independent of reality and is merely only useful in describing it. Enjoy having the meta view on everything though. Sincerely, a phil major who got into math way too late.

Looking to end up as a Political Science major, but might go back to English, or switch to something more practical like Journalism or Mass Media Studies.

Of course I still have a potential transfer in there as well.

>People who define themselves by their major

Not trying to be too critical, but I just never got this. I study lots of things, and just because one of them will end up on a silly little piece of paper doesn't prioritize it to me.

A stupid stoner I once knew, when asked this question, would always respond "I'm majoring in Life. With a minor in Adventure." He's an idiot, but I think he might have had something there.

The problem is that in today's practical world services and things looking to hire will judge you by your major many times. Though it all depends on the industry.

Neither of those are more practical. Journalism is a shrinking industry, and mass media is about as practical as those other disciplines. If you're smart, you can secure some co-op or intern work.

And to top it all of, many countries don't do majors or anything like that. There you have a, I don't now how to translate it properly, "direction". You try out for a certain compilation of classes like in my case:
I'm on architecture. It means I have drawing, sculpture, technical geometry, urbanistic composition and so on. And everyone else has the same damn things with me. The only variation is if I want to do oil painting or sculpture. Your college system is really flexible but I don't know if it does a good job at preparing you for what you have to be doing in life.

Let me ask you this. If you aren't studying something that will define some large part of you, like your career (which you will work on for most of your life), then do you really need to be at a uni paying that much just to receive "credentials" for it?

I think I wasn't exactly clear. It's not that your major doesn't matter -far from it. It's only that what you study and what you ultimately choose as a profession is only one factor of many that make up who you are as a person, and a very minor one. It provides your means to survive, but does nothing to reflect the content of your character. I would say "You are not your job," but then I'd just get shitstormed for referencing Chuck Palahniuk.
