What´s Important?

Those of us who pay attention to the news are assaulted daily by a barrage of information: international conflicts, sport tournaments, religion, gun rights, marriage rights, terrorism, and a plethora of other topics. What topics are truly important? Are not the most relevant topics those which most directly relate to humanity´s continued survival on this planet? If so, what could possibly endanger our survival: are we not the dominant species? Yes, but we, like all other organisms, depend on our environment for our survival: we must eat, drink, breathe, and reproduce. Increased environmental instability leads to an increased rate of permanent mutations, which in turn leads to a genetic instability in the species and either death/extinction or successful mutation (http://www.pitt.edu/~jhs/articles/Maresca_Schwartz_sudden_origins.pdf).).
The most commonly mentioned environmental theme is global warming, which is overly polarized and, due to the complex interactions within the environment, is hard to speak of in concrete terms: it will thus not be included in this text.

Impending economic collapse and international conflict should be our biggest worries. But the only thing to do is to watch it unfold (besides maybe preparing for an emergency situation). It's better to absorb yourself in literature, than thinking about these issues I would say.

Our (first world) economies doesn't collapse anymore. We just have periods where things change slightly, the news coverage changes, and everyone gets really scared for a while. But really nothing substantial ever happens. Dramatic collapses are anachronistic at this point.

It depends on what you include in your moral. You say humanity, but the only reason you fight for humanity instead of, for example, mammals or vertebrates is because mammals which are not human can't complain directly to you, which makes you assume their suffering is worth less.

It's a matter of identity. Throughout history groups have identified themselves and excluded all others. Europeans didn't see native americans on the same level as them, "slave" in some contexts simply means people which are not people. It makes it easier for us to explore others. War is about protecting my nation over yours, but no nation is objectively better.

Now, what is important today? We are global, the news come from everywhere. It's not enough for you to fight for the quality of life in your neighborhood or city, because those are, more than ever, influenced by all other cities, all the global decisions.

Being dominant and powerful doesn't justify power. There is no way to use power without stepping on the other, fighting for the environment because we need it is illogical in that sense. We need to sacrifice certain power to balance ourselves with the world and with nature.

"Truth" is just nonsense. The worst crimes were committed with "truth" as an excuse. If one claims to know what truth is, then that person is just a ruthless dictator with no respect for knowledge or debate.
