Yes, they're not fake.

shiggydit

>> No.2849564

I don't really like Norton criticals. The historical material is nice, but the criticism seems really conservatively chosen and is usually really dull for me.

If I absolutely had to pick a favorite line of published editions, it would be the Case Studies in Contemporary Criticism editions from Bedford/St.Martin's. The selection is limited, but the historical material is great and the criticism is neat as hell.

Bought The complete Grimm Fairytales from them. It was not complete!

I agree on it being one of the greatest novels of all time, but if you're going to have three copies of it, at least get different editions or something, shit.

Master-race paperbacks coming through.

Oxford World's Classics are the shit.

>> No.2851552

What's the general consensus on Wordsworth classics? They seem to be so cheap, and I can barely resist.

>> No.2851557

>>2851552
Usually full of textual errors, both in the sense that they reprint contested manuscripts and are poorly proof-read. Avoid.

>>2851541
fuck yeah!

>> No.2851594

But so ugly

>> No.2851652

Dalkey Archives. Beautiful covers and very well made but what they publish is small (since they usually publish only the more obscure, modern and post-modern authors).

>>2851552

Wordsworth are generally awful, the only exceptions being works originally done in English.

The reason they're considered to be terrible (and thus sell cheap) is because they use public domain translations which are full of errors. I came across a Dostoyevsky book from them once, and not only was the translation the worst I've seen (I know Russian for comparison) but there were grammatical errors, typos, and even missing punctuation.

what's lit's opinion on modern library books?

>> No.2851680

>>2851664

Almost always positive.

Modern Library, Norton's Critical and Oxford are probably the top publishers imo. Penguin is nice too, but I prefer Oxford.

Dover > Norton Critical

sorry

>> No.2851691

I don't know in general, but I prefer the Penguin MacDuff translation of Brother's Karamazov to the P&V one

>> No.2851732

Wordsworth are ridiculously cheap and the introductions tend to be a little more academic than the ones you get in Penguins. The range is kinda crud though and the translations aren't usually recommended.
