Is there any demand for short story writers in today's literary market?

Or do you have to first be famous like Gaiman to have your short-stories read?

There is demand for individual short stories in specific short story markets, mostly magazines, journals, etc. However, you are unlikely to get either a wide readership from it or any significant amount of money. If you want to make money off short stories, you need to already be famous - short story collections sell notoriously poorly.

There are loads of magazines and stuff that pay for short stories (though admittedly they don't exactly pay very much). I'm not entirely sure who reads them, though. Look at https://duotrope.com/

Anthologies and magazines are always looking for short stories, I've got five stories due to be published in 2012 at the moment and I'm not Neil Gaiman.

..Which is sadly reflected in the amounts I've been paid for my short stories and the fact that not many people will read them. Because yeah, unless you're Gaiman or King or another author that has an established fanbase, you don't make much money from short stories, they're not widely read, and publishers will be very, very reluctant to consider a collection of your short stories unless (and sometimes, even if) you are a best-selling novelist.

What's wrong with writing novels? I think they are the shit.

I don't know, as far as a side thing to make some extra money on the side they aren't so terrible.

>write novels

ya but novels are too long for the stories I want to tell, I don't need 300 pages to get to the point

novels have too much fluff :(

If you're new to writing, short stories are the way to go. Short stories first, novels later when you know what you're doing or you'll just be wasting your time.

The novel is dead.
