Hey /lit/ can you help me find a book for my father to read?

He reads page-turner-ish books. I suggested Dan Brown but he's read everything by him, same with Tom Clancy and Michael Chrichton.

Among other things, he has an interest in science if that's of any help.

robin cook mabes?

There's a lot of Michael Chrichton, try Micro, or Swarm.

Relic by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child

my favorite "page turner." I'd recommend it to anybody.

Neal Stephenson. Just give him Cryptonomicon. That way, if he doesn't like it, it's at least an effective doorstop.

Umberto Eco, In the Name of the Rose and Foucalts Pendulum

John le Carré maybe?

He might be. The books are pretty accessible for someone with your father's reading habits. He may enjoy the stories, they're pretty good.

foucault's pendulum was anything but accessible

anything by Matthew Reilly
not exactly deep in any way but they read like a every great action or adventure movie ever mashed together and played in fast forward

If you want quick easy to read no brain stress try Lee Child, I use him between 'difficult' books. He doesn't use science in the sense you suggest but plot twists and deduction instead.

OP ignore this guy, not easy reading for your father.

What did you find so inaccessible? The language is pretty easy, sure the story is intricate and the pacing is a little slow but other than that...

would historical fiction interest him? are there any historical periods he's interested in?

Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn

While poorly developed and a bit simple you may consider getting him into Star Wars Rogue Squad books. They are simple, fake science based, and enjoyable if you are into Star Wars even a little bit.

>> No.2815829

he might really dig the alienist by caleb carr (and theodore roosevelt has a cameo in it which is pretty neat)

also a case of need is a medical drama type michael crichton that he published under a pseudonym and there are characters who aren't just mouthpieces for different scientific ideas and are actually sort of developed

Jeffrey Archer: A Matter Of Honor.

Recommended.

His prison diaries are excellent reading.

>> No.2815915

Dean Koontz. His Frankenstein series and Intensity (a personal favorite) are really fucking good.

Of mice and men is usually published with cannery row. They make a nice combination.

Try Margaret Atwood. I read Oryx and Crake in a day (450 pages).

It's a futuristic dystopia about arts vs sciences and bioengineering/gene splicing, survival (in several ways), and who knows. It's also considered post-9/11 criticism if that is interesting (although it was mostly written beforehand...)

Atwood grew up with a bunch of scientists, so she's confortable writing realistically about that stuff, and a lot of what she writes is possible today, but exaggerated. anyway, it's cool and the sequel came out some time ago, if he want to continue with it.
