Have you read The League of Extraodinary Gentlemen?

I finally finished reading all the volumes in one sitting. It's a work of genius. The world building is top notch, and all the literary references, winks and nods are brilliantly handled.

I know that this isn't /co/, but I'm willing to think that you would actually enjoy it a bit more. Fantastic series.

Let's not forget the GLORIOUS PASTICHES all over the Black Dossier.

I just couldn't enjoy the second volume. I guess it had to happen, but it just seemed sudden and.. extreme. First was great, and reading up about the rest seem interesting as well. Just volume two doesn't strike my fancy in the slightest.

Did you read From Hell? If not, do so.

From Hell has to be my favorite thing Alan Moore was involved with. In all honesty, it's worth reading just for Eddie Campbell's artwork. It's absolutely stunning.

I've only read V for Vendetta. I'm not a comic book fan so is there a GOD-TIURR list of /co/ essentials?

/co/ is quite broad in its tastes, you won't get a uniform /co/-core. I'll give you a few titles I like that others seem to enjoy too though, covering indie and "cape" comics:

Anything by Daniel Clowes - Ghost World, David Boring, Death Ray, A Velvet Glove Cast in Iron etc.
Maus (and any issue of RAW compiled by its author, Art Spiegelman)
Chester Brown - I Never Liked You
Joe Sacco - Palestine
Most Alan Moore - Watchmen, V for Vendetta, From Hell, League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Whatever Happened to the Man of Steel?, Swamp Thing
Neil Gaiman - Sandman
Frank Miller - The Dark Knight Returns, Batman: Year One
John Arcudi - The Mask

That should get you started. If you like any of the indie stuff, getting a feel for other material shouldn't be difficult; a lot of these guys tend to write in groups (Chester Brown is good friends with Joe Matt and Seth), whilst Clowes, Spiegelman and Charles Brown were all a big part of the 80s Comix scene. Just follow the trail.

Cape comics is literally just a case of typing in "Best [Superhero] Stories" in Google. Some will be shit, but some do interesting things with the genre (see: Grant Morrison's recent run on Batman, or his Dada influenced Doom Patrol series)

Do you mean just for Moore or for comics in general?

Here's one for Moore. I'd particularly recommend Swamp Thing, The Ballad of Halo Jones and From Hell. Promethea's first TPB is also great, but after that the series disappears up its own arsehole.

I didn't like The Killing Joke; no idea why it's so revered.

There's also a really great adaptation of City of Glass, and Art Spiegelman's Breakdowns if you're interested in formal experimentation with the medium.

Thank you, gentlemen.

I'm kind of uncomfortable with the later LXG series, Alan always gets really pissed if anyone does anything to 'his characters' and yet in the most recent ones he's blatantly using stuff from Harry Potter and Dr. Who, I don't mind if it's victorian fiction, but this seems kind of hypocritical to me.

Also, they aren't very good.

I didn't really like Maus either, bad, clumsy writing with some mediocre, unnecessary art.

Ballad of Halo Jones.

Man that takes me back to 80s, it was my favourite story in 2000AD for a long time.

>Promethea's first TPB is also great, but after that the series disappears up its own arsehole.

I don't think you and I would get along. Promethea is probably one of the most interesting comics ever written, the whole way through.

>> No.2810971

Promethea ends up becoming a lecture on magic and imagination.

If you're into that sort of thing it's pretty cool, if you were on it for the story, I can see why it becomes dissapointing.
