A little game for you /lit/ that I know you will enjoy, I will list three things that are positive in a book but you can only pick two of them, chose wisely.

>Good prose
>Interesting characters
>Good plot

Keep in mind this tailor made book will be the last one on earth so don't tell me you wouldn't read a book unless it has all three.

Characters and plot. A good story can be poorly written. A bad story can be extremely well written. I'd rather read the poorly written one.

Reading for plot etc. etc.

What is the problem with reading for the plot?

>> No.2810396

Good prose, and interesting characters. Do you even read?

>> No.2810397

I'd pick good prose and interesting characters. Most of my favorite books are basically plotless, so this would probably fit my taste.

Good prose and good plot.

A good story can be written without any discernible plot. Just look at post-modernism. 80% of it is about nothing in particular.

Still has a plot. It's a somewhat freeform plot, but it's a plot nonetheless. You need to have all of these elements to have a novel otherwise you just have words about random shit, and if you're into that stream of consciousness stuff I don't know what to tell you.

Can anyone give some definitive examples of each two combos?

>> No.2810500

Not sure how you can have interesting characters without good plot. How characters cope with what's happening to them is precisely what makes them interesting, and the two are entwined too much to consider one of them being absent while the other's there.

Is everyday life an interesting plot? No
Does everyday life have interesting people? Yes

Can someone please explain the anti-plot sentiment? I would be interested hearing the reasons behind it.

I'd have to say Notes from the Underground, interesting character(s) but not very much of a plot as far as I remember.

Prose and characters.
>implying you can have the second without the first

>> No.2810556

>>2810510
The only way to find out about the characters is through the plot. You could even define good plot by examining how much it makes the characters shine.

>>2810514
It's the misconception that 'good plot' means 'exciting'. Since good books usually aren't that exciting, some people think that the plot isn't as important to the narrative, which is plain wrong. A well-crafted plot (which includes good pacing, etc. etc.) may not be quite as noticeable, but it's still integral to the whole.

Interesting characters and good plot.

Game of Thrones is dirt-tier prose yet it tell's it's story well.

Even the Hollywood hack mouthpiecing Kate Holmes gets it. Get it together you two.

Fuck the prose. I want people with a purpose, not some author's wankery.
