Anybody here speak Norwegian? How hard is it to learn, relatively speaking? Pic semi-related.

Pretty easy, I'm just starting to learn it. The hardest things are the intonations (the ways in which it goes up and down are part of the proper pronunciations) and the dialects. It's a heck of a lot simpler than German though.

Take the verb for "to be" for example:

I am - Jeg er
You are - Du er
He is - Han er

I rest my case.

It's gonna be tough to learn the pronounciations of the language. The language isn't a far cry from English, however, so it's relatively easy to learn the grammar. English and Norwegian has a common ancestry of course.

It's also a gateway to learning Swedish and Danish as well, so that's a plus.

It's very simple. Link related.

I actually read this a few minutes, pretty interesting.

Anybody have any suggestions for someone who wants to learn it?

Immersion is the easiest way, but you can probably pick it up relatively fast with a textbook and pronunciation guide.

Once you have a cursory grasp, open up Hunger in the original Norwegian and keep reading until there's something you don't understand. Research it, then continue in that fashion.

Thanks a bunch, I think I'll head to the bookstore later.

Norwegian has always fascinated me for some reason, despite the fact that I'm partly Danish.

"Hunger" in norwegian is "sult"

Just consume Norwegian language and culture. Torrent the Pimsleur Norwegian course. Listen to Kaizer's Orchestra or whatever and read the lyrics.

Watch Norwegian movies such as Dead Snow, Nord, and The Bothersome Man. You can watch the latter on YouTube, if it's still on there.

You can find texts of the original Norwegian version of Hamsun's Hunger online - on Open Library and #bookz, probably on Project Gutenberg too.

Get a book such as this:

Is Norwegian the new trawl topic?

>> No.2794493

Norwegian here, don't waste your time on it. While we do have a lot of great literature (Hamsun is the best we have though), you'll get much more out of learning german or french.

How difficult is Russian? I kinda want to learn it because it seems to have the best range of fairly recent lit outside of English.
