This is a book I've wanted to read for the longest time but was always intimidated by it.

Can anybody recommend a particular translation of Don Quixote? Every time I go into a book store, there are always around a half dozen different versions of it, I never know which is going to be the one I'll enjoy.

Anybody have a suggestion?

Oh and yes, I'm a fuckin' pleb, but I didn't just want to say "which one is easiest to read", but that's basically it. Or the one that's flowery! Just so long as it's a pleasure to read and not a chore.

Grossman is the new standard but isn't without problems for nitpickers. Bloom's introduction is horrible and mentions Shakespeare more than Cervantes since its Bloom.

The old norton critical - not new Raffel but Ormsby - is another popular choice but out of print now so it gets less popular coverage since you can't expect whole classes to search out copies. I personally like Ormsby best but possibly because its the first I read.

The easiest to read is the Signet Classic translation by Tom Lathrop. It's good for plowing through the novel.

You should try learning Spanish though.

I'm reading the Lathrop version right now, and it is pretty easy. Not that I've read any other translations to compare it to yet.

I have the Motteux translation, originally published in 1700 &1712. Apparently it is noted for its "liveliness and fidelity to the spirit of Cervantes' Spanish". Due to its relative proximity to the original publishing might account for its "savour" that other versions lack.

Alright, bought the Grossman translation with the helmet on the cover with a red background.

Finishing my current book in the next few days, can't wait to start. I have a stack of things I've purchased but not read, but I've been wanting to get and read Don Quixote for ages. Here's hoping it's as great as everybody says! The few bits I flipped through were fantastic.
