Hello /lit/!

Is anyone here familiar with the work of Ryu Murakami? I've read all of his (translated) books, and was wondering if any of you people could recommend me similar books/writers.

He's famous for having his novel "Audition" adapted into a Takashi Miike film and also for writing and directing "Tokyo Decadence".

Thanks in advance :)

Hello Vicky (lol you now you don't have to fill in your name and address).

I downloaded the film Audition a while ago, I should probably watch it.

I love him, Vicky. Can I call you Vicky?
I've never met a dame quite so charming who was interested in his work, however. Might it be we've found each other by Destiny?

Email me and let's keep in touch. I think you're a keeper.

Some say his work is similar to Bret Easton Ellis and Chuck Palahniuk, but i disagree. I think those two just try too hard to look shocking and edgy, and failing at both.

That said, I did like American Psycho and Palahniuk's "Haunted" had some pretty funny stories.

Not sure how familiar you are with Japanese lit, but I would recommend Osamu Dazai and Yukio Mishima. They were the frontrunners to Murakami, and share many similarities. Rampant sexual and violent transgressionism wrapped in beautiful prose. I rate them a bit higher, since both create stronger endings than Murakami. I loved the rousing climaxes of ATB and Coin Locker, but I felt like I had to sift through a lot crap before I got there. Just the random shit in ATB, and the jail arc in Coin Locker. Never read Audition but I imagine it is similar to the movie. It's fun recommending it to people as a romantic comedy, and I've shocked a few people that actually put it on their Netflix queue.

As for more modern Japanese writers, try Natsuo Kirino. Uncanny, unflinching physical and thematic brutality from a female perspective.

THANK YOU! I've read some Kirino stuff (really liked "Grotesque") but I'm not familiar with the other two, so thanks for the tips!

Have you read Murakami's "Piercing" and "In The Miso Soup"? I think they were far better than CLB (and I agree with you, CLB had a lot of pointless filler). As for Audition, I'd say the novel is quite different from the movie.

Kirikirikiri....

What can you tell me about the 'Audition' novel?
I greatly enjoyed the movie by Miike and have been thinking about reading the novel it is based on.

No! I really want to read In the Miso Soup, and I kick myself for not buying it since it came out in paperback. The old Kodansha edition was like this weird coffee table book size. Hmmm, if Audition is that different from the movie, I might have to bump it up further on my “to read” list, since I genuinely love the movie.

Haven’t read “Grotesque”, because I heard it was censored. I looked for an uncensored version online, but I could not find one, nor the omitted chapter from the American version. I loved “Out” though, and back when I had first read it, I heard some buzz about Hollywood wanting to option it. Ick. Apparently the Japanese film version is not that good either.

Speaking of films, are you familiar with the work of Shunji Iwai? He’s not necessarily dark, but that is one territory he can veer powerfully into, and he is one of the best shot composers working today. Check out “All About Lily Chou-Chou” and “Swallowtail Butterfly”, both great works in their own right and evocative of Murakami. The former can be found in its entirety on Youtube.

I've read it a long time ago, but from what I remember there was much more character development, and you truly get why the girl did what she did. I mean, I did enjoy the movie, but it had more to do with me being a Miike and horror movie fan than about the story itself, you know? All in all, if you liked the movie I do recommend you read the book.

>>2754050
In the miso soup is my 2nd favorite Ryu Murakami novel. Pretty harrowing stuff!
As for Grotesque being censored, according to wikipedia it was only one publisher (knopf) who did it. Get the one published by vintage (uk), as far as I know that one wasn't censored. It's a good book and you get to see how crappy it is to be a woman in Japan (yeah, still today).

I wonder... if all those weeaboo girls read this book, would they still gush about how Japan has the best culture ever?

Oh, and the movies: I've seen both of them, and I get why you'd say they remind you of Murakami, since they deal with isolation and alienation. They also have some pretty good soundtracks, and this coming from someone who doesn't like jrock!

Yeah I completely get you. Miike's movies are often kinda strange and Audition was no exception to it. I mean I loved it, but things weren't really clear at all and I wasn't even sure if everything you saw was true and actually happening. But it is ages ago that I watched it... have to rewatch it someday.

Well thanks for the book info, I will add it to my to-read list and get it in the future.

I'm ok with strapon or being pegged that's alright just tell me we can sleep together in the same bed and let the hours pass gazing into eachothers eyes trying to read the others thoughts. Just tell me we could end our days with our eyelids forcing themselves shut as we stare compelled at the complexities of one another. We could be warm and exchange our body heat on the cold days. I could write aloud and have you look over my shoulder and point out my flaws. Just tell me this is a possibility.

Please. You have to do just that.
All of the stuff about me not being able to handle it

Do you understand how it feels to reinforce yourself with slits across the flesh alone? My first paycheck I ever earned many years ago I used a small portion of for spare razors that could help for to make my flesh sing to me a newfound pleasure. I did that for very long before I could get off it. You know for a whole that was all sensation I could feel in myself. When not vomiting to feel devoid of nourishment and the goodness of hunger that was the closest to love I felt. I'm long past then but I was in so deep it got to me.

If Vicky doesn't want you, I'll have you. I love broken people. People who have given up with the pretence of conventional normality and embraced themselves. Your flaws are your most attractive feature. I would gaze back into your eyes and give you the loving reassurance you need. I would walk naked to the the kitchen to bring you something to eat, then climb back into bed with you to interlock our fingers and kiss each others cold noses. Most importantly, I would give you somewhere to belong. To call home. In the warm gap between my arms.

huh? It's not fake, and I know you're not actually broken... you're perfect. It is society that's broken and has left you wounded. But i'm here now. I'm here and I will be your adoring muse. Together we shall stick our middle fingers up at the world because the only thing that matters is that we have each other. The only thing that matters is that I have you, to cradle in my arms, my wounded warrior. I have my flaws and vices too, but I know you can embrace them. I drink and smoke, snort and inject everything that I shouldn't. I swear, I can be violent, I have a tendency to steal cars, and I don't think I can get pregnant. But I can love. I can still love and I would love you if you allowed me in. We could share our burdens and create the purest of expressions in every medium. We could fight the world together by day, then curl up at night to caress and discover every inch of each others bodies and minds. I would love you with all of me. reality would blur into a grey muted backdrop leaving us merged together in full deafening color.

Definitely want to read ITMS as well. I always thought it was interesting how he weaved growing up near a military based into ATB, and I imagine he explores an interesting dichotomy between foreigner & Japanese that, as opposed to the minute details in his first novel. Weird that Knopf censored Grotesque, considering they published American Psycho. Perhaps it was a legal? Iirc, the chapter in question involved an underage prostitute, so that could have been the case.

Weeaboos pretty much ignore anything between the cracks when it comes to anything Japanese. Although not as overt, the aforementioned themes in this thread pop up in shows such as Evangelion and Madoka, yet it flies over their heads. Take Battle Royale into consideration, a blatantly harsh criticism of Japanese culture and society, and that aspect being completely masked by an Orientalist lens. Weebs are fucking hopeless.

Thanks, but I already have ’em! I had seen the film on DVD beforehand, but it was on /t/ a couple years back, and the OSTs came with it. I was so happy, since I could not find them anywhere.
