One of my favourite books. So great. It treads such a nice line between comedy and tragedy. And it is a potent critique of patriarchy's negative effect on not just women, but men too (Rochester getting stuck up in a shitty, but economically advantageous marriage).

So it's basically Pride and Prejudice 2: Revenge of the Patriarchy?

>> No.2710837

>>2710829

Absolutely not. I hated Pride and Prejudice. Northrop Frye would say that P&P is a proper novel (focused on exteriority, characterization mostly through dialogue and action), while JE is a romance. Not in the sense of those crappy Harlequin novels, but in the sense that there is a tremendous sense of interiority to Jane's character. And P&P is just a boring social manners comedy.

>> No.2710845

Charlotte's prose is god-tier. No one uses a semi-colon better than she does.

>> No.2710846

>>2710837
I wouldn't say it was 'just' a social manners comedy, since there is a LOT of subtle criticism of the purpose of marriage in society and all that. But I haven't read Jane Eyre so I can't compare.

>> No.2710856

>>2710846

Yeah, but P&P is just painful to read. And intentional fallacy. . .

>> No.2710862

it depends, OP

if you are reading this book while is having anal sex with other man (and you are a man), yes, I think this will make you gay
