Dear pseudo-Buddhists,

It is not enough to read a book, to enter a building or to buy a plane ticket to "change your worldvievv" or to "see something different".

The first step through alterity is to get to know, and not just feel, one's own culture, i.e. to do its critique, so you can be able to detach yourself from it, to detach yourself from it as a whole, which means not just just from the things you dont like.

So, please stop your mumble and before choosing where you want to go see where you are.

Thanks.

Speaking of (also, I was just watching the episode of Community about Pierce's pseudo-Buddhist cult), what are some good on Buddhism to start out with?

Most people are just embracing a culture that they feel gives them a purpose or identity.

Can't really blame them for trying to escape a mundane existence, even if it is misguided.

Ignore Theravada Buddhism.

The Zen Experience, by Thomas Hoover is really good, and is free in the Kindle store. Alan Watts also has some good books on it.

Bastard or Western Zen is really interesting as well. Zenarchy and Zen Without Zen Masters are both good introductory texts.

Just remember that you won't reach enlightenment through rigorous study.

yeah cant blame them but that does not fix 1) the damage they cause to that culture 2) the blockage they cause inside their own culture and 3) the reproduction of what they try to avoid.

i dont care about their motivations, they are fucking everything with their "identity" quest.

>> No.2698690

Jesus fucking Christ I'm just interested in learning a little about Buddhism, not achieving enlightenment. And you know what? Even if it was within my reach, I was just teetering over the cavernous depths of understanding, I wouldn't take that plunge.

So fuck you, "defenders of the faith." You're worse than the Crusaders.

As if an Anglophone has any choice: every book about Buddhism is about Mahayana or Tibetan Buddhism.

fuck! that is the approach im trying to attack! you aint gonna find anything on a book, just there ready-to-think.

if one is not ready to reject what one loves r likes about one's own lifestyle then there is no point in trying to "critic one's own culture".
