I just finished this. I thought it was good. Solidly entertaining, a quick little read.

>> No.2687455

This book genuinely scared me. Best treatment of a conspiracy theory I've read.

I don't even like Pynchon that much but I don't know how you can call him boring.

Bullshit, it's anything but boring.

My main problem with it was how it was nothing fucking special. I have no clue why people praise it like it's some modern masterpiece. It's decent stuff, moderately and pleasingly deep, but it's just a cleverly written mystery, and it stops abruptly. Not inding out was a good touch, but just cutting off mid-scene as silly.

Was the doctor scene the climax? It felt like a random scene that wasnt' even a part of buildup. Was the borderline stream-of-consciousness segment before the end a denounement? The book's form is fucked up, and the author said so himself, too.

It's good, but it's not very good. People praising it loudly (let alone "studying" it) are imbeciles.

Pynchon himself is a little too hard on it

Nailed it.
The only reason people recommend it is to get a taste of Pynchon without having to commit to one of his tomes.
Written for money and it shows.

>Written for money and it shows.

We're talking about Crying of Lot 49, not Inherent Vice.

Sauce on Pynchon being hard on it?

Introduction to his short story collection "Slow Learner". It's even available online.

>> No.2688505

>>2688492
Pynchon is hard on all his writing.

If you've read Slow Learner, he basically calls all the stories shit in the intro.

"The next story I wrote was The Crying of Lot 49, which was marketed as a 'novel,' and in which I seem to have forgotten most of what I thought I'd learned up until then."

>> No.2688625

Who gives a shit what Pynchon says about it?

I thought it was excellent.

>> No.2688632

>>2688505

Well to be fair they're definitely not his best work.

>> No.2688792

>>2688508
It's barely dismissive but he still probably doesn't think it's his best.

Methinks he favours Mason & Dixon the most, as he should. Seeing as how it's clearly his best.

CoL 49 is a novella THAT NEEDS TO BE READ TWICE TO BE APPRECIATED/UNDERSTOOD.
