2677192 No.2677192 [Reply] [Original]

I always wondered why age restrictions were never implemented for books.

>> No.2677194

1) nobody actually wants to read the damn things so it's not so big a deal

2) for parents to find out what inappropriate content is in the book, they'd have to actually read the damn thing, as opposed to seeing five minutes of a movie or something, so it's harder for them to find out and thus throw up a ruckus

3) to a certain extent, they do, but only really in the form of censorship at school / municipal libraries

What are you talking about

In Germany you have to carry American Psycho in a brown paper bag

>> No.2677198

>>2677192

here in germany, books can be banned.
american psycho was kind of banned from 1995 to 2001

In my local library, there were only ever age restrictions placed on young adult books. An 8 year old could hypothetically read Lolita and not be allowed to read The Hunger Games.

in germany every book that isn't about how evil the nazis were is banned

>> No.2677246

>>2677237
indeed

bahaha

but its kind of right, books which critize the holocaust for being wrong or made up by the jews (you can get into serious problems if you claim that in public) are mostly banned.

Is Mein Kampf banned in Germany?

>> No.2677249

>>2677247
its a complicated case, the state of bavaria owns the copyrights on the book and they refuse to publish it.

its dumb, because the book is incredible boring and dull and everyone quits after 30 pages.

actually theres a discussion on publishing a commented version of Mein Kampf.

>> No.2677255

>>2677247
Don't know about that, but you can't even ask where Auschwitz is without people getting all embarrassed. Germans, for the most part, are ashamed. You probably won't find a German bookshop selling Mein Kampf.

>> No.2677256

>>2677255
>Germans, for the most part, are ashamed.

Well, I mean, rightly so. If anything, they're not ashamed enough, and part of that is probably because of the blocks on discussing the issue.

I thought Auschwitz was in poland.

I'm going to Germany for the Okoberfest this year, I might bring a copy of Anne Frank to troll the locals with.

>> No.2677260

I think they're ashamed just fine. It's not like the current people of Germany did anything. They should only have to be ashamed of their country's bloody past so much.

>> No.2677261

>>2677249
But they did let some journalist publish excerpts from it a few years back.

what should I be ashamed of? Of what 3 generations did before I was born?

haha no.

>>2677259
its in poland

you will troll no one with the diary of anne frank

>>2677261
excerpts are okay, because they are mostly commented. the book as a whole is a "problem"

>> No.2677265

>>2677259
You really aren't trolling anybody with the book, everyone who isn't a tourist will hate you just fine the way it is.

Oh come on. They shouldn't be expected to carry around guilt for something their ancestors did.

My grandad got really drunk and shat himself last Christmas, but I don't personally feel guilty about it.

Britains are the most fun, they think they no shit about drinking. 5 Liters of beer and theyre down haha

Yes. But Oktoberfest is when a couple million people fly in for the sole purpose of getting piss drunk for a week. Basically, it's a giant kegger.

I'm already working on my tolerance. I'll give you guys a good run for your money.

Do you think Munich is the best place to go? I heard some of the more rural places hold smaller events and are quite good. There are ten of us and we are all under twenty five, if that helps.

I thought Munich was great when I visited Germany. The public transit system is easy to work with, and there's a some guy selling pretzels/sausages every 10 feet.

Germany has a lot of beautiful places, I live in Berlin and its awesome here. Recently we had the carnival of the cultures, amazing. If you want to go out and drink and for clubbing, I think Berlin is the best place to do so. If you want a massive beerfest - Oktoberfest in Munich.

Also Frankfurt am Main is cool, kind of a small NYC.
