What does everyone think of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson?
Favorite book? Least favorite book?
The man was incredibly talented.

I actually liked "The Rum Diary" the best. He really destroyed his talent with chemicals in his later years, and you can see this when you read through collections of his newspaper articles. By the time of "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas" he was already going downhill.

Only read Hell's Angels, liked it, but I don't think he was incredibly talented. He had courage luck and knew how to write.

Ive only read The Great SHark Hunt. Ive got Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail awaiting.

Say what you want, but that man knew how to live. There arent that many iconic journalists, and theres a reason he is one..
And who cares how factual his stories are, the dude could spin a yarn, thats for sure.

The Rum Diary, Hell's Angels, Great Shark Hunt, Kingdom of Fear, Generation of Swine, and Better than Sex are all books he wrote that I have.
I also have the oral biography of the many people who knew him.
Really really interesting man who lived and died on his own terms.
RIP Dr. Thompson

Try reading "Gonzo", Its a biography of Thompson written in pure gonzo style.

The author gives an account of Thompsons life by going to his farm and interviewing him. Thompson ties the girl up and holds her hostage until she's written the book. Its a brilliant read.

It's actually all I've read. HA. The man was chaos. He didn't die, he just ascended into his true state of existance.

A less intelligent, skilled, and erudite version of H.L. Mencken. His stuff is not bad but he's massively overrated.

Just finished it... Poor ralph.

I loved the book in itself, but felt kinda sad about it. It felt like Thompson was trying too hard to recreate fear and loathing. I could just imagine him alone in a hotel room thinking "this needs to be more crazy...right, blue arm... now drugs on the boat" I would have liked to have seen a more journalistic approach from him.

I'm 18 pages in F&L Las Vegas and I love it
I watched the film before (I wouldn't have if I had had the choice) and read 3 or 4 pages of the rum diary
plus some quotes and anecdotes here and there and some stuff about him

From what I know so far he seems to be an awesome writer

what about cracked.com?

By the way, I don't know this site, just googled it, becuase of the jack nicholson story, which goes like this:

Thompson's birthday celebration for his friend Jack Nicholson consisted of the following, outlined in his book Kingdom of Fear: "a massive outdoor amplifier, a tape recording of a pig being eaten alive by bears, a 1,000,000-watt spotlight, and a 9-mm Smith & Wesson semiautomatic pistol with teakwood handles and a box of high-powered ammunition." Oh, and a frozen elk's heart, which he left on the actor's doorstep while he played the tape through his Jeep and the amplifier, and let off a couple rounds from the Smith & Wesson.

(confirmed and corroborated by both Jack Nicholson and his then-partner, Anjelica Houston.)

I think I read somewhere else, that they hid in their panic room, and thompson later apologized

also, that story is less "hilarious" and more "a reminder that hunter s thompson had legitimate substance abuse problems and was in many ways a deeply troubled individual"

I dunno... To me it's like wikipedia: I don't read it for the writing style, just for the facts. Most articles are actually well researched, But I get that people call it dumb. Without the "fun facts" it's like mad, but less funny

>also, that story is less "hilarious" and more "a reminder that hunter s thompson had legitimate substance abuse problems and was in many ways a deeply troubled individual"

I never said it was hilarious. Actually, I pretty much agree with you
