Is the Silmarillion a tough read?

>> No.2672032

it is

>> No.2672394

It's worth it.

>> No.2672403

I love it.
It could be seen as a tough read.
It's definitely worth it, though.

The Silmarillion will challenge you like few other books can.

>> No.2672422

It's reads like a history textbook except it's all fake.

>> No.2672436

I've always loved this cover

I just finished The Children of Hurin, quite enjoyed it, and plan on reading the Silmarillion soon.

>> No.2672454

One of the most boring books I've ever had the displeasure of reading. This, coming from a fan of The Lord of the Rings.

>> No.2672464

it's the elvish bible

>> No.2672471

You are perhaps better off reading the creation story, the children of hurin and the lay of luthien.
It's a slog at times but not too bad. I don't think there is anything in there worse than book 2 of the Iliad.

I would agree with this. There are good stories separated by a lot of boring parts (that kind of describes Tolkien in general, I guess). The origins of Angband, and the story of Beren and Luthien, were my favorites. I think those are the ones you mentioned.

Also, it gives you a kind of hipster satisfaction in knowing the backstory to all the cultural references the characters make in LOTR.

i'm such a slow history reader. even though i knew it was fake history and i could gloss over the details, i still couldn't just read it faster.

when i try to speed-read, i lose focus and have to start over.

so it was taking fucking forever, and if i put it down for a couple days then i'd forget wtf was going on.
