What does /lit/ think of Paul Thomas Anderson?

Y'all looking forward to The Master?

What does lit think of L. Ron Hubbard in general? I think I can guess.

P.T. Anderson's one of the greatest living American directors

I worked on this film for a couple days, got to meet Paul and Philip Seymour Hoffman. From the looks of it it's gonna be pretty killer.

>> No.2665475

TWWB may be one of my favourite films of all time.
This looks good too, the Scientologists won't be too thrilled with it though.

Hard Eight - ehh.
Boogie Nights - his masterpiece.
Magnolia - not bad. Some good moments.
Punch-Drunk Love - didn't enjoy at all.
There Will Be Blood - very good.

He has talent. Might make some great movies in the future. Some might suck.

>> No.2665622

I should add...
The Master - Haven't seen it but making a movie that might be critical of Scientology; that takes balls. Look forward to seeing it.

You've got Magnolia and Boogie Nights mixed up, imo.

Hmmm.
Magnolia was very ambitious. Too ambitious. He just didn't carry it off. The bits about unexplained events. I don't know what they added to the movie. At the beginning, the scuba diver in the woods, that was just ridicules. The scoops on those airplanes are small. Impossible to pick up a person. That's an 'urban myth' that's been around forever. And the ending, everyone singing. I don't know how he could have ended it but the ending he had just didn't work for me. I enjoyed the movie, it was just flawed. Everyone in that movie delivered an excellent performance and when that happens I think you have to credit the director.
Boogie Nights on the other hand... perfect. I'm at a loss to think of any criticism.
Punch Drunk Love I'd give a 0/10. I sat there for an hour and a half then wondered, what was the point of that? Maybe Hollywood made him make that movie in order to get future financing. That's the only explanation I can think of.

>Magnolia better than Boogie Nights and There Will Be Blood
It was a decent movie, don't get me wrong, but it didn't have anything near the energy and clarity of Boogie Nights, and it didn't exhibit the keen care and craft that went into There Will Be Blood despite the latter's odd stylistic choices.

I'd say you've got There Will Be Blood and Magnolia mixed up. Magnolia was amazing, and it all weaved together beautifully, but it just doesn't have the same power as TWBB. It was overambitious and in the end felt more sentimental than anything else - and I'm still not sure how I feel about those last scenes with the Aimee Mann song, it felt kind of.. 'cheap', or at least not fitting with the thoughtfulness of the rest of the film.

TWBB, on the other hand, was simply devastating.

Also, there's a really good early-PTA short here if anyone's interested: www.vimeo.com/2447683

Because "a background actor" makes you sound like you're a douche. I've been an extra before and no one, not the agency or people on set, used that term.

There is something butthurtish about it.

What does everyone think of PT Anderson's screenplays? I think that, line for line, he has the best dialogue of any screenwriter I've read/heard.

"Fuckin idiot! Fuckin idiot! Fuckin idiot!"

>> No.2666043

just saw boogie nights for the first time -- it's kind of fucked how everything gets all warm and fuzzy at the very end, it's like in disregarding all the real social and economic pressures on the characters it became pornographic itself (which i'm guessing was by design mark wahlberg whipping out his dick onscreen being the tipoff)

there will be blood is a brilliant horror film

stoked for the new one
