Hello /lit/,

I am searching for a historical fiction book that had a female mercenary protagonist. I believe the book was set around the 10th-14th centuries. The title was a single word. Modern swear words are used throughout and the in-universe explanation is that the book is the recounting of history by a modern scholar who wanted to preserve the intentions rather than exact words of the characters. The main character was possibly raped as a child/teenager which is the reason she became a mercenary.

I only read an excerpt of the book but have gotten the strong urge to read the whole thing. Can anyone please help me find the title/author?

the comic Berserk? except the girl is not the protagonist so it's probably not it.

also it's a comic so it's probably not a book

Mary Gentle's Ash - A Secret History? Though I think it is historical fantasy.

Ash is the one. Thank you kindly anon, I'd read an excerpt late last year but couldn't get access to a full text, then I forgot the name and it kept bugging me every few weeks.
