Celine for sure. Some Fante perhaps. Maybe some Miller but he talks a lot semi-philosophy weird shit, so you'll have to be able to stomach that.

if you really want to look into bukowski check out the novel that greatly influenced him to write ham on rye, Ask The Dust by John Fante. italian dude.

Read each author he recommends in his writings: Knut Hamsun, early William Saroyan, Hemingway, Camus, Sartre, Robinson Jeffers, Dostoyevsky, DH Lawrence, Gorky, Schopenhauer, and Ezra Pound. There are some more but I can't remember them right now.
