Just finished reading Memoirs from the House of the Dead, by Dostoyevsky, and I'm pretty unimpressed. I find it hard to point any good points about the book; most of it was extremely bland and uninteresting. The only remarkable point that made was, in my opinion, the flaws that derive from subjecting all criminals to the same punishment, that is, imprisionment. Othat than that, the book was simply dull.

So, what did you think of this book, /lit/? Is this Dostoyevsky worst?

I read this piece of crap a could months ago as well. This felt like Twilight compared to Crime and Punishment, or even Idiot, which isn't even that good.

B... Bump? Someone around here must have read it.

I loved that book even though it's been a while: more its romantic aspects (the animalistic environment created by filistines of the worse kind) than its ideas, though a couple of these are also nice (now I only remember the one about how prison is worse for rich people, because they are more of a person).
Couldn't say much, it's been long.

This was my experience with all of his work.
You shouldn't be surprised.

It was exciting 100 years ago I guess, but by today's standards its just boring as fuck and his prose is really clunky

he did feel guilt, eventually.

I often think people didn't have to try so hard back then to be writers. After all, there were 1/2 as many people on the planet, and in the modern world there are about a million more writers trying harder than they can handle.

Yet very relevant for self-involved young men such as ourselves. And it's not so much about morality as it is about this guy just breaking down mentally.
