I'm a teacher and I wouldn't give two shits. Oh, did you mean in formal writing? Yeah, don't do that. It starts you out on considering your word choice in a situation where word choice matters. Contractions aren't a staple of formal writing due to the general conventions of English.

Most writing is formal for school. Speech certainly isn't these days. If someone is writing an essay or a speech, contractions are out. If someone is writing fiction or a journal entry, anything (within reason) goes.
