[SPOILER] No.2622925[SPOILER]  [Reply] [Original]

I was forbidden from reading the Hobbit when i was younger. According to my mother it was evil and she wanted to save my soul. I use to hate her for this because she let me read Harry Potter and play D&D.

Two weeks ago I find out she's actually traumatized from being forced to play Bombur in her middle school play and was viciously made fun of because of it and didn't want to have to read it again with me for my school book report.

I wasn't allowed to read Harry Potter as a child. Luckily, it turned out they are total shit, so everything worked out well.

I wonder what effect it's had on you to be raised by someone so pettily selfish.

I went to a Catholic elementary school, and they banned Pokemon cards. But we traded them anyway.
Pic related, I feel the flames at my feet.

Not a book, but similar in theme.

I was forbidden from going in Spencer's Gifts when we went to the mall.

They were right to do that.

My parents forced me to act in filmed reenactments of scenes from Naked Lunch when I was seven. I now have severe problems and my sexuality is broken forever.

what kind of puritanical household do you live in? i come from a christian family but an intellectual one too so we discussed everything openly. i was allowed to read anything. of course in my younger years my exposure naturally followed my father interests but it wasn't a problem since they were teasingly diverse. he wasn't deeply involved in science or math but on enthusiasm, breadth of reading and ability to retain information alone he could be considered a polymath. His own interests were skewed slightly towards fantasy and mythology (LotR and Yeats) but that was a broad enough category in itself and an excellent jumping off point .
In spite of the opportunity find your enthusiasm and relevant entry point is still a personal journey. I was also only going to find it in my own time a few years later once i got over the childhood literary fads and found the confidence to dabble in trickier texts ranging across science and philosophy at my leisure. From then on, i was able to explore elementary reading from regions and subjects i wouldn't have previously considered.

Even though the book was in the house my parents wouldn't let me read Xaviera Hollander's 'The Happy Hooker'. (I read it anyway)

I hope you were there for your mother OP - when you found out the cause of her craziness.
And why is a girl playing Bombur? Was you mother fat? Could that have been a contributing factor?
