/Adv/, how do you make sure your language is suitable for your target audience?

I'm writing a book for kids somewhere between 5 and 7. I can't remember my reading level at that age.

Is "intimidating" a big word? But "scary" sounds too dumbed down.

Ask them. Go to a playground somewhere, bring some candy to make them interested.

In children's literature there's no such thing as "too dumbed down."

When I was 6 I was able to use a dictionary. Avoid condescension like the plague and trust that they'll use one.

Look up some books for that age group for examples

Kids are actually pretty smart.

Either way, they've gotta learn somehow.
Make them think.
Never dumb down.
