Almost halfway done with the second book, enjoying the series so far. Not terribly well written but Sanderson is really good at making you want to keep reading and his fight scenes are super fun to read. What does /lit/ think?

I've read the first, and have the other two.
The book was okay. It wasn't remarkable in any sense, but it wasn't terrible. I'm saving the sequels for when I don't have anything to read.
The magic system was pretty nifty, though.

>> No.2610523

>>2610521
Yeah, that's the main thing I liked about it. Sanderson really thought it through. I don't like the second as much as the first so far but I'm invested enough that I think I'm gonna finish them all.

The magic system would work really well for a videogame, hope they make one. I searched it and it looks like theres something in development.

I can't stand his writing style. He comes up with cool ideas (like burning metals) but writes like a high schooler and shoehorns cliched romance in.

I am a great fan of this book and i finished 1-3 although after those i found Alloy Of Law lacking, it was nice they using a Wild West theme and such but i think i will stop there i don't want my memories tarnished.
Also OP or anyone else in this thread do you have suggestions for me to read?
List anything that resembles Mistborn or anything that uses a magic system.

That's a very vague subject area.
All of Sanderson's other books are good, and you'll enjoy them if you liked the Mistborn trilogy.
Check out Dan Simmons, too.
Steven Erikson is alright, not phenomenal, but not bad.
Avoid Terry Goodkind, unless you like Ayn Rand.
Raymond Feist is also quite good.
Gene Wolfe's Book of the New Sun is good as well.

OP here. Not really sure what you've read already so I'll just list some of my favorite fantasy that I've read.

If you like Mistborn and want a similar book then I HIGHLY HIGHLY recommend you read at least the first Dune novel. It doesn't have a magic system per se but in my opinion I think that Sanderson was really inspired by Dune when he wrote Mistborn, the two share lots of similar themes.

Obviously read A Song of Ice and Fire if you haven't. Sanderson was never really good at realistic portrayals of house politics and military strategy/leadership. Martin absolutely nails it. Definitely read these if you haven't, they were the best fantasy books I've read recently. They do have magical elements as well, but they're downplayed a lot.

I listened to a few of the podcasts from Writing Excuses (The one's with John Scalzi and Patrick Rothfuss). All of the hosts are fucking Mormons. It's like fantasy has been invaded by these freaks since that hack Orson Scott Card got in the game
Also, stop bumping with that stupid fucking art.

Is that why so many people here hate Rothfuss? His mormon heritage? The Name of the wind was a nice book, i don't think you should judge an author if their works are acceptable although that obsession with denna was annoying

Just read the second book. Holy shit.

The first 400 pages were so bad I almost gave up on the book. Absolute garbage.
At least the last 150 pages or so weren't as bad.

Because all literature are written by computers that randomly compile facts about a topic say for e.g magic into one book and they throw in some angst, teens, humble beginnings, they are special, great power, they must kill or be killed, romance, they both want to fuck yet they can't see it and behave awkward like they are not having feelings for each other.
Rinse repeat throw in a few random odd names make some maps and you have a new book.
