People who cannot write competently should not be taken seriously when discussing religion.

Why?

And are you saying Vonnegut wasn't a competent writer?

I am saying that Vonnegut is an example of a writer who should be taken seriously.

People who can write competently are capable of forming coherent and logical arguments. This is a skill that many scientists and skeptics lack, even though many of their arguments are based on the literal text of religious works. Most people who write competently are also fairly well-read, a quality which carries with it an open mind. Reading Slaughterhouse-Five gives one a greater understanding of fate, purpose, and human nature. The Things They Carried imparts to the reader a knowledge of "truth" and its meaning. Only people who can capably express their thoughts on abstract and subjective concepts should be taken seriously.

Do you agree?

I'm sorry, ones skill at writing has only a light causal correlation with ones intelligence and reasoning abilities, let alone ones adeptness at carrying on a formal argument.

There are competent writers who hold idiotic views about religion/politics/philosophy/etc. And there are terrible writers who are brilliant at the aforementioned.

Good writing is hardly a measure of anything other than good writing.

if someone writes a poorly constructed argument and you tell yourself, it's okay he's right anyway. that's not proof that they are smart, it's just proof of your own stubbornness.
