just recently got into arthur rimbaud pretty hard. anybody know of any writers (ie. poets) that have a similar brand angry surrealism? suggesting / providing specific pieces would be just peachy

also, where the fuck do you find a decent translation of 'a season in hell' on the internet?

I really like Charles Baudelaire. Poetry kind of sucks for translations in general-- can you read French well enough to get by with a dual translation, and compare? Poetry translated into another language is always going to be a pretty faulty translation. Most of my editions are from some of the top French literature scholars in the nation and when I read them side by side the French by nature is almost completely different. I think I first read A Season in Hell on poets.org

Unfortunately all the English translations of Maldoror suck dick.

Comte de Lautréamont is pretty impressive. Also, you should try to read Verlaine's work.

I love Verlaine better than Rimbaud. Before he was arrested, his poetry was beautiful. I don't like his poems so much after he found his faith again.

Rimbaud is great. I don't consider Rimbaud a genius, only explosive and unique. My french is not very good, and that's the main reason I can not have a strong opinion on french poets.

A good surrealist which I love is Mario Cesariny, a portuguese poet. He's terrific! Pena Capital is outstanding.

There is also a german poet, which is always forgotten. Paul Celan has beautiful poems and I'm sure you'll find good translations out there.

I don't really like translated poetry, some words just can not be translated, ergo, the poem looses some of it's sense, beauty and so on.

You should read Antonin Artaud, he is a very crazy and angry surrealist.

"I myself spent nine years in an insane asylum and I never had the obsession of suicide, but I know that each conversation with a psychiatrist, every morning at the time of his visit, made me want to hang myself, realizing that I would not be able to cut his throat"
