I'm going to sail ac cross the Atlantic. 4 weeks and all I can bring is 1 book, maybe 2.

What would you bring? Preferably something that's worth reading a few times.

>> No.2568658

Complete Works of Shakespeare

>> No.2568662

If you had an ereader you would be able to carry a lot more than just 2

i'd take anything with a screen, because the ocean is boring as shit and i read fast.

If you want to read the bible, read this version:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jerusalem_Bible

It's one of the purest/best translations.

>> No.2568802

something by Plato maybe? Something to think about.

>> No.2568812

Don Quixote, maybe Tom Jones.

>> No.2569976

take something long as shit but also entertaining. I suggest the unabridged version of the count of monte cristo or a suitable boy by Vikram Seth. If you're into fantasy you could take the single volume edition of LOTR.

people who ride boats across the atlantic ocean don't need to read infinite jest. fuck to be stuck a boat where my only books are infinite jest and pynchon. my own personal hell.

OP, your idea of reading the bible is a pretty good one for such a crossing (i'm not christian either), moby dick ain't bad either, and i'll go ahead and suggest the odyssey.

>> No.2570014

1 fiction
1 science/philosophy
1 [auto]biography
1 collection of short stories
1 collection of poetry

can't specify because i don't know your taste but this plan will keep you covered and prevent boredom. You'll only need a small bag if they a paperbacks.

Ok, will do. I hear Robin buss is good, anyone read it? I think it's the penguin classics edition

>> No.2570102

'A People's Tragedy: The Russian Revolution, 1891-1924' by Orlando Figes.
A good long book, well written, very interesting (if you're into history/Russian-history), took me two weeks to get through it and then I re-read quite a few sections. A good book for analysing and thinking about (as I said, providing you're into history) and gives you a fair amount of insight as to why the Soviet Union was as it was, and even why present Russia is as it is (it goes into the mindset of the average rural peasant and how they viewed heads of state, something which hasn't comletely changed even a hundred years on).

>> No.2570132

Be careful OP

It may sound like a good deal but they usually stop a few miles offshore and demand more cash to go the whole way.

Wouldn't want your one or two books to get wet.

>> No.2571191

Kindle's are like $100 bro. Then you can literally download thousands from torrents for free.
If you have 4 weeks just go around your suburb mowing lawns or sell some old shit or beg.
Anyone can rustle up $100 in four weeks, and then you have lots of books

>> No.2571381

You'd want something long, so i recommend Les Misérables or A la recherche du temps perdu, lots of good stuff to read and ponder.

>> No.2571404

>>2570100

yes, the buss translation is considered the definitive edition of monte cristo.

>as to why the Soviet Union was as it was,

does he talk about the fact the jews were behind it?

>> No.2572224

>>2571406
He does go into the anti-semitism that was comonplace in rural Russia, talks about pogroms and why Jews were viewed as threats to the revolutionary cause.
