Just finished the 13th book of The Wheel of Time. Need something to scratch the itch while I wait for the last book.

Doesn't have to be fantasy. For instance it could be something like Legend of The Galactic Heroes (If you're familiar with that). Basically something that has a large world and relatively detailed universe that I can lose myself in with a healthy dose of politicking. I looked in the wiki and nothing really stood out to me.

Can anybody point me in the right direction?

>> No.2564401

The obvious choice would be Dune but you've probably already read that.

>> No.2564409

Well you don't have too long to wait... MoL is coming out early 2013 IIRC.

I can't think of anything really great that has the precise merits that Wheel of Time does. Perhaps Erikson, perhaps Lois McMaster Bujold's Vorkosigan books. Of course you could just take the easy route & just read whatever epic fantasy series strikes your fancy, and probably enjoy it enough. Hm. I'm sure there's other things but not coming to mind at this precise moment.

>> No.2564410

Anything written by Orson Scott Card?

>> No.2565793

I'll add Vorkosigan books, Malazar book of the fallen and Foundation.

Anybody have more more suggestions?

If you want a decent scifi series, try the Honor Harrington series or the Vorkosigan series.

You can get both of them completely free sanctioned by the publisher right here: http://baencd.thefifthimperium.com/

I thought about recommending the Honor Harrington series. The one thing that stopped me from doing so was that it's really kind of bad.

But, yes, the BaenCD system is great and worth poking around in if you are okay with milsf. The Vorkosigan stuff is the best stuff on there though.

Truth be told, I'm only working my way through the HH series now (finished Vorkosigan last summer, and you're right, it's the best thing on that site).

I recommended HH because while Weber has a really bad habit of using info-dumping as a substitute for conversation and he tends to get bogged down recreating naval history, when his writing engine finally turns on, he writes some pretty damn tense shit. He runs on idle for like 90% of the books, but then he kicks it way up at the end.

So far, I've been willing to sit through the rest for that last 10%. It remains to be seen if I can keep up the momentum.

How are the newer books he did?

I read the first couple direct Ender's Game sequels he did, but only got halfway through the Ender's Shadow books/sequels. And apparently he's done more since then?

Anyway, I'd recommend EG and its sequels, with the warning that the sequels are nothing like the first book. EG is basically YA fiction, while the sequels are more traditional science/speculative fiction.

What is this shit? A thread on GRRM books comes up and everyone says they suck, but a mention of the Wheel of Time (One of the shittiest and mediocre series) recieves no flak? Seriously, fuck you guys.

How about history? It's like fiction, only it actually happened. Seriously, get out of genre fiction.

Fair enough. If you enjoyed Vorkosigan, I would check out LMB's fantasy stuff. I actually think it's kind of better (although it is somewhat less schlocky/pulpy).

Even better, pretend that the history was fantasy fiction.

And imagine your least-preferred nation as elves.

Those damn Russians, always hiding in their forests and letting nature do the most damage. Fuckers. Glad the Cold War totally fucked them over. I hope they never come back.
