I think continental philosophy is getting really popular. I see people quoting Derrida and Foucault on Facebook and the philosophy section at my local Barnes and Noble has recently been totally revamped and has loads of continental stuff now.

Have any of you noticed this?

I hadn't, but I should think so. It was time.

No, it's not complete bullshit. It's fun, which is more than can be said of the 'our shit contains equations' mob.

Haha, that reminds me about that one girl on facebook who just keeps quoting Nietzsche and Kierkegaard. She says they're her idols

At least they aren't quoting Ayan Rand or Confuscious

thats relative to the observer. i find joy in logic and mathematics, that doesnt mean i feel the need to bash anything that isnt analytical though.
also its quite obvious most people will never get into analytical philosophy and therefore need to turn to continental stuff when trying to get answers to questions that bother them. i could point out its a lot easier than actually using reason and logic, but lets not be that arrogant just this one time :)

No it's not easier. There is no sum to make sense of eight million dead. Mathematical logic has no relationship to how people live, and that is what philosophy has always been about.

I put up a Foucault quote on my Tumblr page ages ago and it's constantly getting quoted/liked.

I don't think more people reading something like Discipline and Punish is necessarily a bad thing.

Both Nietzsche and Kierkegaard? That is quite remarkable.

No, it's worse when they quote people I respect because it makes ME feel less special. Fucking idiots shouldn't be allowed to the read the same shit I do. I'm BETTER than they are.

I'm personally bringing William James and John Dewey back.

Oh and Bertrand Russell can go fuck his grandmother.

>It's just that that shit doesn't tell us anything we're interested in finding out.
it doesnt tell YOU what YOU'RE interested in, as you do a) not understand it and b) are not interested in what it does tell us. now please accept the fact that theres people who do understand it and want to learn about deep, fascinating topics as the nature of truth itself and the truth-value of propositions, rather then whining about morality and your teenage existential crisis.

hmmm, i guess it depends heavily on the university, mine has excellent phil of mathematics and phil of language departments and they are completely free from bullshit. if it werent for these, i probably would have quit too and focussed solely on mathematics. good luck with linguistics, its an interesting field.

At my university, phil. of language is not even covered on the bachelor course. Not kidding.

Thanks. I've already begun reading a linguistics textbook, but I've been studying it for years. Mostly stuff related to language reform, quantitative linguistics, computer-assisted analysis, etc.

Mostly seems to be the hipster and emo kids so that they feel like special snowflakes.
