Why do you try to escape the meaningless void that is your life by consuming literature that imposes meaning onto its characters? Don't you know that it's all futile in the end?

I sure do. I do it anyway.

Also, I impose meaning onto the literature, it doesn't do it to itself.

Answer me this: would your life be more or less meaningful if due to some quantum fluctuation, your universe arranged itself so that you would be the main character your favorite fictional universe.

I'm not trying to escape, not anymore. I'm just trying to slowly die by means of a pleasant suicide.

This sounds like Nihilism; my understanding is Camus advocated going on in life despite the supposed truth of everything being "meaningless"

Also try being less reductionist

I' think there was a section in Myth of Sisyphus, or maybe some other paper he wrote where he talks about how art should not try so hard.

I'm not saying you should end your life. I'm saying every time you read a book, it's escapism. For a moment you feel like you've transcended the meaningless life of your own. You fantasize about being the main character and living in his universe. That's why you read so much. Because every time you stop you feel depressed. it's like a drug, you need to stop poisoning yourself and face the truth anon.

>> No.2539255

Nihilism can't advocate ending your life since it has no basis to do so.

Diogenes was asked, "What is the difference between life and death?

"No difference."

"Well then, why do you remain in this life?"

"Because there is no difference."

>Advocacy of suicide

Forgive me; I earnestly didn't think this was a big part of Nihilism. 100% honest here

Still, Camus was more an advocate of Absurdism and I think such a viewpoint validates the behavior OP is criticizing.

And personally I indulge in fiction because I enjoy characters and good stories. It gives me something to do and I find myself truly amazed by all manner of fiction, if it's done so well

I couldn't care less about being in many of these stories; simply experiencing and discussing them is good enough for me.

Chapter 3: Absurd Creation
>"If the world were clear, art would not exist."
Here, Al explores the "absurd art" which is prevalent at the time. He basically points out that "Absurdism" ultimately means losing hope for meaning, faith or any explanations.

>Absurd art to him is ephemeral. The absurd artist isn't trying to make an important, lasting statement, nor is he wanting to give answers to something. He's simply reflecting on the world as he sees it.

What you need to realize, is that on the highest level, trying to strictly follow some "doctrine of absurdism as taught by the Prophet Camus" is inherently absurd, so just do whatever you want and keep a subconscious realization

Why not just live to live? Just have fun with your life, it doesn't need to be more complicated than that.

because living takes effort. the default thing to do is to lie there and sleep until your hunger overcomes your desire to sleep and then you go out and hunt for food

>> No.2539317

>>2539299

But following solely your instincts also takes effort. Can you really just lie there and not do anything as you falter into slumber? You might even accidentally end up dreaming and hoping for something more than what you were doing. Most certainly it would arise in your subconscious somehow.

And you're back to being tempted with effort once more.

The only answer is never having been born. Secondary to that is suicide, but that one takes quite a bit of effort...
