>Metrics which measure human competence and intelligence.
>Invariably met with shrieks about how they're "false" or "irrelevant".
All that means is that not everybody can measure up to them even if they want to, which means they actually work.

I've been told I write like a genius. I know that's not true though, it's just that I have an exceptional vocabulary and am extremely articulate.

>that feel when you have a huge vocabulary when reading, but a small one when writing.

This doesn't really make sense, unless you have some sort of aphasia. Ideally, your understanding of language would be proportional to your ability to articulate yourself in that same language, not have a huge disparity.

It's like you can't think of words to use off the top of your head. You recognize them, but you can't remember them for usage.

I'm the same way, it goes for other languages I know too, I can read literature in French and Japanese but I can't speak or write for shit. I highly doubt it's aphasia of all things.

A larger vocabulary allows you to explain the same idea with greater concision. Ergo yes.

Not quite, once broken down to fundamentals everything can be adequately explained using few words at any level of vernacular.

I don't think so, once you simplify things they don't have to stay complex.

Nah, keep it simple and it can still work out.

>Not quite, once broken down to fundamentals everything can be adequately explained using few words at any level of vernacular.
The above sentence does not mean the same thing as the following one:
>Nah, keep it simple and it can still work out.

You have demonstrated nothing.

You need a good vocabulary to write at an academic level.
Having a good vocabulary isn't going to make you write at an academic level.

No. DFW is proof that this isn't true. He even admits it himself if you couldn't figure it out from reading one of his essays.

Couldn't get through his essays. He went on a tangent about playing tennis and hitting balls into hurricanes.
