About to read this, what should I expect? Do you guys like it? I've never read Pynchon before, or post-modern literature at all yet.

He's almost as bad as Ayn Rand. Don't read it and save yourself from the agony.

Really?

>> No.2533311

It's alright. A logical place to start with Pynchon given that it's very Pynchon-y Pynchon (textbook Pomo, etc.---you'll get a great idea of what Pynchon's works are like) and it's bite sized.

I found it to be a rushed, mess of a book with a nothing protagonist, but the writing is good and it is affecting at times. Don't expect to understand it, especially in the current epoch; it hasn't aged that well.

It's worth a read, OP.

>> No.2533315

It's Pynchon's best book. In fact it's his only readable one, written before he vanished up his own arse on a surfboard of hype.

Lel.

>> No.2533326

one of the best pieces of literature I encountered, enjoy

>> No.2533333

don't expect a tight plot, or a real resolution. just hang on for the ride and enjoy pynchon's weirdness and writing style

>> No.2533370

It's Pynchon's least enjoyable book (that I've read so far).

I know its short length makes it appealing as an entry point into Pynchon's oeuvre, but imo 'V.' would give you a better taste of what he's all about, and just in general give you more pleasure.

Not entirely pertinent to the thread, but I'd also suggest reading 'Mason & Dixon' and 'Against the Day' ahead of 'Gravity's Rainbow'.

More like "it's the only Pynchon's book I could finish"

>> No.2533388

Level 1 Pynchon.

what sort of niggerdum is that now

>> No.2533988

Pynchon-lite, though not as much as Inherent Vice.

Christ, what is post-modernism anymore. Does anyone really even know? Is it not just a catch all?

I read this for the first time last week and loved it. I'm halfway through V at the moment, turns out /lit/ is good for something after all.

>> No.2534036

Post-modernism is everything after modernism, ofc

>> No.2534061

>>2534036
No kidding, but beyond that. Define port modernism as something solid beyond "not the normal". You can attach Post-modernism onto anything. Lady GaGa is postmodern by definition.

>> No.2534080

>>2534061

Post modern in terms of the arts usually refers to a merging of high and low culture, self awareness, and dark humor.

no it doesn't
