I just finished reading the fifth volume of Spice and Wolf and have thus far been amazed at how awesome this series is.

It's a Japanese light novel. It's a special type of short novel that reads much like a shitty transcription of an anime, even if it's an original work.

Take a 16-year old. Let him see an action movie. Put him to describing it in the form of a short novel. Edit the thing a bit, but leave all the awkward gimmicks like crazy punctuation, ridiculous PoV switches, hilariously confusing passages that don't mean anything, and childish meta-jokes ("your name is like that of a manga character!" is probably invoked in every single light novel in existence), and you get a Japanese light novel.
