I have listened to a lot of talks and lectures and to my surprise I found him to be very a very original and insightful thinker. I expected some drugged-out hippie, but McKenna's actually very well read, a really good speaker, and can make connections from Hermeticism and Neoplatonism back to Joyce and Nabokov while talking about McLuhan and new media. Very cool guy and I would recommend listening to some of his things: especially /lit/-related the things on Finnegans Wake.

Very interesting, eloquent individual. He's become something of a figure of worship in some subcultures. Many of his ideas are unsubstantiated garbage, just like McLuhan, but hey, DMT will do that to you.

His colleagues are also worth checking out.

The only contention I have with McKenna is how his florid language has been taken verbatim as gospel by idiot stoners everywhere because they are incapable of reading rigorous philosophy or thinking for themselves.

Still, I like McKenna. Decent writer, excellent speaker.

I ate up his Food of the Gods when I was 15 and had just started smoking weed and thought alcohol and caffeine and sugar were the devils work and if we could all just get high as fuck on mind expanding drugs everything would be alright, man.

It was a pleasant and interesting read though.

Really? To me he seems like someone who seems to do nothing but parrot other peoples ideas.

Well, if it seems to you that way then you haven't heard more than one of his lectures.

I like the stuff about Aliens, Asteroids and Magic Mushroom Eating Monkeys.

I used to think like that at one point, with the exception of caffeine, but I've since realized that tobacco and alcohol are bad ass. I fucking hate weed.

anywho, I have no fucking idea who that guy is. whatever

You were probably referring to the post below the one you quoted, which is mine. I've had the same change of heart. Caffeine I can take or leave, but I love drink and tobacco. Weed actually repulses me a lot of the times, the smell alone can be enough to summon memories of weakness, passivity and lack of clarity. It can lead to interesting states of mind, but more often than not in the way it is used today it sooner leads to stupidity than insightfulness.

I've gone through periods of HEAVY marijuana use and I can say that I'm past that stage. Shit fucks with your brain

Why is this?

Because I associate it with getting high of course. Weed tends to have a very sedative effect on me. Hashish is better, but still not something I like to use more than once a year or so.

Same here. Its 18 years later, I still like to think that way, although the bullshit of everyday life so get in the way. I wanted to be an ethnobotanist because of him, didn't end up because, well, ethnobotanists end up broke and crazy.

Unfortunately, this is all too true in todays world. I also just remembered how he was saying ( or at least I always interpreted it as so, myself being a reluctant female) that women were the downfall of the expansion of the mind and its ability to connect with nature on a consciousness level. Jeeze, no wonder I'm so fuct up.
