Hey /lit/

Bukowski is extremely overrated yeah but I'm actually enjoying his novels to be honest. I've read Post Office, Ham on Rye, Women and currently reading Pulp.

Is there any similiar writers ?

I'm not a quest to read one of ever author that seems vaguely remarkable or appealing until i discover one i really like to the extent that i can read more of their stuff. hasn't happened yet.

only read one of his - factotum - picked it up randomly off the shelf. i think all his stuff is supposed to be the same so I don't think I'll bother with any more

Even though I think Henry Chinaski is a great character.

factotum is hios worst novel, man. don't stop there. hit up either post office or women as well.

similar authors? erm...try looking at his influences: hemingway, celine etc

maybe henry miller too? raymond carver was a great contemporary of his. and along the lines of carver maybe try more minimilistic writers like amy hempel or gordon lish, though these won't have the same themes as bukowski they will write in the same, sparse, meaty style.

also, don't neglect bukowski's short stories as they are fantastic. try his collection south of no north.

Celine Hamsun Fontane are what Bukowski would recommend. Two of those three are worth it. I'll let you find out which.

Read Bukowski's poetry before you call him "extremely overrated"

Good choice of his novels though, other than Pulp.

He does mention his favorite writers in his work all the time, few that come to mind:
Louis Ferdinand Celine - Far away the best, most cynical, blackest comedy. If you haven't read him you aren't qualified to speak about the human condition.

John Fante - Ask the Dust. nuff said

Knut Hamsun - Hunger. Very good, hard to relate these days, starving to death out of pride is almost comical now.

Hamsun is one of them, OP.
