doesn't something like ennui allow for it to happen?

To me, is a sin is something you do, like murder:
>Mum, I done another murder!
You cannot do ennui. Ennui is something you experience.

Is ennui man's greatest sin? It's not a sin at all. Is it man's greatest fault? Maybe.

I always thought it was vanity and by extension avarice.

Ennui is unavoidable I would think. Sometimes you just have to wait.

sin is what goes beyond being necessary. ennui comes about when too much is given and necessity vanishes. so ennui is a symptom a highly sinful situations. like the modern world.

Are two exclamation marks a sin? Is an indoor hat a sin?

how is ennui is a "sin" at all
it's just a byproduct of affluence

(is affluence the greatest sin of man?)

yes. sin isn't like misbehaving and being punished, that's a weak-minded notion, it's doing things that will lead to future difficulties. using limited resources for things that aren't necessary (and having utilitarian view of what's necessary is another issue) leads to problems, something we've lost sight of in the opiate haze of modern consumerism.

But what is necessary? It is different for everyone.

I for example like to masturbate. I give me pleasure. Some people might think that is unnecessary and is a waste of time. I disagree. I think pleasure is essential for the world we live in.

Who is right? It's all an opinion. Boredom is not a sin. There is no such thing as sin. Is boredom a good thing? No. Does it mean it's a bad thing? No.

Boredom is an action for you. It's inefficient, but hardly evil.

it doesn't have to be reached by consensus...i think it's more just like a tendency thing and not like a reduced-to-a-definition formulaic cause-and-effect thing. going beyond what's necessary allows more room for shit to get fucked up. sleeping with someone else's woman isn't usually necessary, killing someone usually isn't, stealing someone else's food usually isn't. and if it is do what you have to do but you are of course opening up more possibilities for negative fallout from your actions.

i'm not saying there is some objective evil that exists. not at all. i'm just saying i think the idea of sin goes back to going beyond what is necessary, wanting more than you need, growing weaker from needing more, that kind of thing. i think these are good ancient notions.
