So... Real books vs The Kindle. Which is better to have?

Is the Kindle really easy to crush? I've been kind of interested in one, but I'd always have it in my backpack so I'm kind of apprehensive.
Also, I hate reading long texts from screens, but I hear that the kindle's screen is just like a page's face. Is it true?

Pic unrelated.

>> No.2507913

I'm sticking with books. There's an irrationality to my decision (which, I suppose, is essentially a concession to the practical superiority of Kindles), but the dedicated pursuit of the ineffable is - I think - a characteristic of any good reader, so I don't feel bad.

>> No.2507912

The Kindle is more practical, won't get crushed in your backpack and doesn't feel like a typical screen to read from.

If you're just looking for practicality, go with the Kindle. Personally I like real books because I prefer to have something tangible to read and keep on my shelf, but that's totally personal.

>> No.2507915

E-ink is like reading a page, except the text is more crisp.

If you do buy a Kindle, get one of the old ones (not the new colour backlit popular frauds) and buy a cover for it.

My Kindle is perpetually in my backpack (I never take it out except to read it) and I've had it over a year without any problems.

The people who claim their Kindles broke easy must have rocks for hands or something.

I have a kindle but still buy books.

If there is a choice between paying ten dollars for a classic book or getting it for free on my kindle, I'll go with the kindle. If I really love it, I buy the book because I take marginalia and whatnot.

See, that's exactly my problem. I'm afraid I'm being silly about my apprehension towards the Kindle. I like owning real books, but... Like >>2507912 said, the Kindle just seems so practical...

Also, the ability to pirate books and have hundreds with me at once is really a nice idea.

>>2507915
Yeah, I'd be getting one of the E-ink ones because all I'm interested in is using them as surrogate books. Do you know if they all have the same screen size? Or is the Kindle Keyboard's screen much bigger than the regular kindle's?

I have a Kindle 3G. I love that I've pirated hundreds of books even though I probably wont read most of them. I still read physical books every now and then when someone lends it to me or I've had one sitting around that I haven't read yet. After reading so many on my kindle It's kind of nice to read a book to change things up. I read half of Brave New World on my kindle then started reading the second half in a copy my friend had lent me. I never take my kindle out of my room despite having a screen protector and a leather case. I feel like a tool when I read it in public and it's still in mint condition after having it for four months. I'd just rather keep a paperback in my backpack to read on the go.

i've carried my kindle with a leather case around in a messenger bag of sorts with heavy books, a laptop and bottles of water for 4+months without a scratch, i have a growing library of 4000+ books and the text is as good as if not better than real paper, and i've purchased 17 physical books after reading them on the the device.

i must have saved over £400

Pretty much the only difference is pressing a button instead of turning a page. The one thing I don't like is how there are typos in ebooks that have just been scanned from real books. It gets on my nerves sometimes but the ebooks are free so I'm not going to complain about it too much.

Don't get the Kindle. I had the Kindle 2 with wifi since the christmas of 2010, the first time it broke was understandable, it was in my backpack and someone pushed it off a desk. The second time it broke I dont know wtf happened to it because I just looked at it one day and the screen was cracked. I sent that one back about 3 months ago and the day the new one came it broke. I'm not even kidding. I forgot to send it back but for some reason Amazon thinks I sent it back so now I have two broken kindles at my house

I prefer both the feel of a book and the portability of a kindle/ereader. It depends really. There are pros and cons for both but in practical use, the e-reader just trumps a hard-copy.

And I always keep my Kobo reader in my backpack, it even fits in my hoodie pocket and my trenchcoat inner pocket so it's nice.

I like the idea of a kindle, because I can reduce my book budget to less than zero
That being said, I like being a pretentious douche, and being complemented on whatever book I'm reading. Plus, you can lend books to friends, and I've gotten many friends into reading that way
Plus, books are pretty cheap, especially if you buy used, and they're nice to have on a shelf
A kindle is more practical, but I don't see myself getting an ereader unless books become digital only (which may happen. Look at the way the music industry has shifted with bandcamp, etc)

I never even go to book stores. The age limit issue is getting better in Australia, what with the introduction of the R18+ rating classification for games now. Although I don't play video games, but still, that's something positive.

Oh God, there's so many gays in/around The Valley and when I went to vote yesterday so many were complaining about how the Liberals might recede the civil unions. I told the ones near me I'm voting Liberal and they started berating me. I went on to say that I'm not going to change my vote because of one potential event and that I'm looking at the broader picture.

Buy a Kindle. Buy a case for it. If it breaks, call Amazon and they'll replace it in one day for free. I have done this four times after smashing my first one on accident (because I kept getting bad refurbs that had sticky keys).

They're way more convenient than books, they're easy to adjust to, you can download more books on the fly, the batteries last forever if you charge it at least once a week, and they let you bookmark and whatnot like real books.

Only thing I still use paper books for are textbooks, the Kindle is not so great at displaying large images.

I got myself a Nook Color a couple of weeks ago and I love the hell out of it. I've gotten more reading done in the last week than in the whole six months prior. I just can't get comfortable with real books, you have to find a place with light, then find a position in which you won't get tired of holding for more than five minutes, plus I'm visually impaired so I have serious trouble reading normal print size. With my e-reader I can sit down wherever the fuck I want regardless of the light levels or size of print.

That being said, were it not for my eyes, I'd probably still prefer physical books, a file on an electronic device just doesn't get my rocks off like a real book does.

Books last decades. How long will your kindle books last. Let's see, try investing in over two thousand books in a format that will expire...it's a foolish waste of money. Do the math (assume $60 per book... that's a cool $120,000.00. )

Paper is not fragile, it can take much abuse. Eletronic books rely on fragile and ever-changing tech. Also, like the cassette tape, or the 8mm movies, it's got an expiration date.
