Yes, i really do. I'm pretty well read on the beat generation. Read almost the entire Duluoz Legend, John Clellon Holmes, Allen Ginsberg, Burroughs, Cassady, Gregory Corso, Ferlinghetti etc. And it makes me furious when people compare these brilliant minds to the modern pretentious hipster faggots.

>> No.2506676

I like the beats too, but come on, they were pretentious hipster faggots a lot of the time. Just take On the Road.

Haha okay that MAY be true. But to quote the beginning of The Subterreaneans. "They are hip without being slick, they are intelligent without being corny, they are intellectual as hell and know all about Pound without being pretentious or talking too much about it, they are very quiet, they are very Christlike".
I know it's just a quote but that pretty much sums up my trust in a least Jack Kerouacs non-Hipsterdom. And On The Road started the entire beat scene which evolved into the hipster scene but you can't really call Naked Lunch hipster can you?

>> No.2506694

>>2506682
Burroughs would be my main problem in this case. Although cutting up your work and making a random collage of it sounds a bit dadaist (first generation of post-WW1 hipsters).

Kerouac was very sincere and sometimes painfully so, even in his pretentiousness. That's why I love him. In the end he is more of an awkward introvert basement dweller than one of the cool kids.

>> No.2506699

>>2506694
Yeah i agree about Kerouac but to call the dadaists hipsters? I don't know..
Well I'm young, 18, hipster-age... And Kerouac has been (and is) somewhat of my role model. God, i don't want to be compared to these Lady Gaga loving freaks.

Anyways, have you read Desolation Angles? Thats my favorite

>> No.2506706

>>2506699
I've only read On The Road, The Dharma Bums, Big Sur and Lonesome Traveler. I liked the second one the most, mostly because I find Japhy a far more interesting and inspiring guy than Dean. The Dharma Bums partly shares the Desolation Angels scenario, right?

Also, listen to the Kerouac recordings with Steve Allen if you haven't done so already. Glorious stuff.

>> No.2506709

>>2506706
Yes, Kerouac is a magnificent reader!
Desolation Angels takes place right after Dharma Bums and focuses somewhat on Kerouacs Christian beliefs struggeling against his Buddhist beliefs. Its very well written.
On the Road sure is a good novel but nothing like the Dharma Bums, i agree. Japhy and the whole Bodhisattva story truly is inspiring.

That's true. But he doesn't seem to come back to the apparent shallowness of the way their pursuit of the worthwhile life ultimately seems to have. The impossibility of nonconformity is addressed, not it's vanity. At least in On the Road. The Dharma Bums and Big Sur are more interesting concerning that matter.
