/lit/'s thoughts on William T. Vollmann?

Or "Contemporary Author General"

>> No.2492575

Vollman is in the top ten living authors list IMO. The Atlas is a masterpiece.

What a peculiar and interesting guy. Looking at the first baby paragraph of his Wikipedia entry I feel like I'd dismiss a character with a Deep Springs education and lasting guilt over his sister's drowning death as quirk overload if they showed up as a character in a Fox Searchlight release. Do you have a recommended starting point or should I just start looking out for Europe Central at the university used bookstore?

On a more mainstream, Michelle-Obama's-Facebook-profile-approved Contemporary Authors tip, I just started reading White Teeth after enjoying Zadie Smith's essay collection and it definitely...reads young. I'll try On Beauty at some point but I probably should have gone for it first.
