Moral of the story: your options are to be an entitled asshole, or to sacrifice any superiority you might have so other people don't feel bad.

I liked the book as a kid, but I do not now. It seems to present a false dichotomy. What if there was an alternate ending, when Rainbow Fish was just all "Sorry for being a prick. I'm going to stop being an ass about it now. We cool?" and the other fish were all "Yeah, it's cool, sorry for making such a big deal out of your scales, it's our fault too that shit got bad."
